Kaiso Makina B

Kaiso Makina B (廻想体 マキナB) is a tall, angular Japanese font that is free to download. Taking the reference from the katakana characters in Morikawa’s Ryobundo (森川龍文堂), the designer uses his interpretation of modernising the font design and made it tall.

The font comes with the essential hiragana, katakana, romaji and fulfilling the JIS Level 1 kanji characters, plus some from Level 2. You can use this font for commercial purposes.

Shirokuma font (しろくまフォント) is a cute font released for free to download by Tokyo graphic designer Kuma (クマ). Created with FontPainter, the designer’s inspiration of the font design is by taking the polar bear’s paw pad as creation image. It comes with the basic Japanese characters like Hiragana and Katakana, however the kanji characters are only restricted to 339. Nevertheless, it’s a well designed font with a sense of organic hand writing.

Usage Permission

  • Cannot be used as logo mark, and also adult, politics, religion, discrimination related contents

Genkai Mincho

Designed based on the open source Source Han Serif, Genkai Mincho (源界明朝) is a eroded version that you can download for free. According to the designer, he “distorted” the font until to the point of being barely readable by human eye. However with this effect, it can expresses sense of epic-ness and drama.

Since the font is derived from the open source font, Genkai Mincho also released under SIL Open Font License, which means you can use it on any project. Please bear in mind that, because of this font has huge collections of glyphs with high level of grungy details, the font size is large and it might slows your machine down when you are using it.

Senobi Gothic (せのびゴシック) is a free font that was designed based on another open source font M+. The designer modified the font by “machine-ise” it and then condensed it by 30%. This font comes with 3 weights: Regular, Medium and Bold, and equipped with the usual Japanese characters and also 5000 kanji characters.

Pop Rum Cute (ポプらむキュート) is a rounded, cute but slightly hard to read free Japanese font that you can download. The design point of this font is each letters are trying to fill up the square box as much as possible, creating the fat, bloated and congested sense, while at the same time sacrificing the readability.

This font comes with the standard Japanese characters and including more than 3000 kanji characters where 2900 plus of them are from JIS Kanji Level 1, and the rest from Level 2.

Ankoku Zonji (暗黒ゾン字) is the latest scary style free font series from Ankoku Koubou. The strokes of the font are thick and the spiky and uneven surface makes this font carrying the characteristics of being a horror design font. Togalite (トガリテ) is a display style free Japanese font which comes with 6 font weight. The font was designed based off the popular open source font M+, the difference is that the edges of the characters are sharpened and protruding out, giving the sense of thorn.

The name Togalite is a combined word of French word “égalité” which means “balanced” and Japanese word “Togaru (尖る)” which means sharp edge.

851 Gochikakutto is a display font that took inspiration from the typography style of electrical appliances. It is slightly slanted and blocky where the letters are mainly constructed with straight lines.

FZ Imokenpi (FZイモケンピ) is a display style Japanese font free for download. The strokes of the characters were like being constructed with torn transparent tape. This font can be an interesting choice for typographic works that require some attention. It might not be a good choice for smaller font sizes as it will lose the finer details of the font design.

FZ Imokenpi is totally free to use and it has the basic Japanese and Latin characters. For Kanji characters, it supports up to the primary school level kanjis which is a total of 1000 plus characters.

Banana Slip Plus

Banana Slip Plus is a display style free font with a little dose of cute elements. It was being refined from the previous version to improve on the visual balance of the characters, as well as adding more kanji characters.

Banana Slip Plus has a strong structure for the characters’ design but softened with the usage of curve lines. Hachi Maru Pop is a cute roundish free font that was inspired by the font style that was once trended in the 1980s in Japan. Such font style was quite popular among the teenage girls in that era. Hachi Maru in Japanese means 80, and they certainly incorporates the essence of the cute culture of the 80s, while the creator made some adjustments by injecting the modern design style into it.

Hachi Maru Pop comes with the standard Japanese characters with an extensive library of Kanji characters. BestTen

BestTen font is a free bitmap style Japanese font that brings back the memory of the days when we are using the old interfaces. Designed based on the 10×10 grid, the font comes with two styles: one called “Dot” which is the unmodified version with crisp edges, while another one, “CRT”, is slightly adjusted bitmap font that are mimicking the CRT display, where the character edges are rounded and the pixels on the characters are connected.

BestTen font comes with 7,200 characters, where the Hiragana, Katakana and Romaji characters are originally designed, while the rest are supplemented by an open-sourced font “PixelMPlus 10”, which was derived from the M+ Bitmap font. You can download and use it for personal and commercial projects.
