Zero Gothic is another free font designed by Flop Design. Using the Source Han Sans as design base, the bold letters come with the shattered effect, thus giving a very impactful visual effect when viewing it. This font works well for large displays and for call-outs, and perhaps not suitable for body text as it’s difficult to read.

Zero Gothic can be downloaded for free and be used on commercial projects. It comes with 8000+ kanji characters, so you can use it with a peace of mind.

Preview of Imokanpi font

Imokanpi (イモカンピ) is an eye-catchy free Japanese font that comes with unique stroke end points. It is as if it was written with a rough tip brush, or the effect you get when you cut a clear tap with a tape dispenser. These rugged stroke end point effect can be seen in almost all characters in the font. This font was created by combining characters from FZイモケンピ as the font base, then added additional kanji characters from Swei 3T Sans.

With its bold weight and the rugged stroke ends, this font is great for big displays to capture attention from the audience. It might not work so well on smaller font size display due to the stroke end effect and the thick font weight. This font comes with Japanese letters including hiragana, katakana and kanji characters, plus latin characters. You can download this font for free for personal and commercial use as it is released under SIL Open Font License.

KeinannPOP (けいなんポップ体) is a trendy looking Japanese free font that comes with kanji characters. It was born from modification of two open source fonts named Genei Pople (源瑛ぽっぷる) and KNBobohei (荆南波波黑). The creator of this font, Yacchan, didn’t exactly mention in detail of the font was being modified. The style of this font design is basically reminded me of the vintage pop font styles, with clean and slightly curved strokes to bring out the dynamic of the font, and soften corners to make this font easy to the eye. This font is suitable for call-outs, video and banner ads. I could imagine this font being used as the call-out subtitle displays on the variety shows, or artworks to promote sales.

KeinannPOP comes with hiragana, katakana and kanji characters supported up to 7,000 characters, pretty much equivalent to JIS Level 2 or Adobe-Japan1-3 standard. Besides that, it also suppots Greek and Cyrillic characters too. You can download this font for free and be used on commercial projects.

Receipt Font

Preview of for Receipt Font

Receipt Font (レシートフォント) is a free Japanese display font that was constructed with dots in grid. According to the font designer, they took references from the font design on the expiry date label of the food products or packagings that you can find in Japan. With my faint memory of my trip to Japan, the expiry date on food packagings from the convenient stores are indeed printed in such typeface. The latin characters are constructed with the classic 5×7 grid, while the Japanese characters are constructed in 7×8 grid.

Receipt Font are display font, with its design, it’s recommended to use it with larger font size. The latin characters are easier to read and well constructed, while for the Japanese characters especially the intricate kanji characters, they are especially hard to read due to the lack of dots available. So I would recommend to use this font mainly for the latin, hiragana and katakana letters and less so for kanjis. Even so, the author has made this font to support all JIS Level 1 characters (about 3000 of them) and plus some additional ones. You can download and use this font for free for commercial use.

  • Free for personal and commercial use

Preview of Kaisei Opti font

Kaisei Opti (解星オプティ) is a modern take to the traditional calligraphy style Japanese font. It is one of the four fonts from the Kaisei Project where it took reference from the calligraphy styled fonts that were the norm in the past, and make it and digitalise it with the modern interpretation. You can see it retained the fluidity and the nature of the calligraphy strokes, with a more streamlined, cleaned up and pop-ish stroke design. The key style of the Kaisei Opti font is the right stroke end is represented with a dot, and they are essential to compensate for the instability caused by departing from traditional forms.

To be honest, this font feels so familiar, I just feel like I have seen this font on many Japanese food and beverage packaging designs. Indeed the font style is eye-catchy, and perhaps cute as well due to the presence of the rounded dots. Kaisei Opti comes with three weights – Regular, Medium and Bold. Out of the four variations, Kaisei Opti is the simplest and the cleanest (hence the name “Opti” which I think it stands for optimised). Besides that it supports kanji character up to Adobe-Japan 1-3, which is comparable to JIS Level 2 character set.
